Thanks for the ideas so far... Yes that's a long flight. I was able to find round trip on United for $970. I then purchased a waitlist upgrade (refunded if not upgraded) for 30K miles and $400 each way. Within 3 days, I was upgraded to first.

I have some leeway on the trip, I do want to do the great ocean drive... is that from Sydney to Melbourne or Melbourne to Adelaide?

prelim planning now for next October
I’m sure Melbourne and Sydney are nice but I don’t travel to see cities

I’m planning to fly into Brisbane, drive south to Byron bay, then up the coast to cairns and fly back to Brisbane
