Hi Tiger.
1. There is no too early timeline. I think they usually put up sawhorses and barricades around 11 a.m. or noon at certain entrances to campus, so it's best to try to get on campus before then.
2. We usually park around the Student Rec Center or Herget Hall lots off of W. Lakeshore behind and across from the canal behind Sorority Row. It's a 5 minute walk to the LSU Union from there. The Union has many things to do and see. It's like a big living room with large screen TVs, restaurants, etc.
3. Tailgates are literally, everywhere. There are tents and canopies and tailgates: on the Parade Grounds in front of the Union, across from the LSU Ag Center on the other side of the Union, in front of the Memorial Tower, all along Dalrymple leading in to the Indian Mounds area, behind the Law Center, in front of the Greek Ampitheater, by the Indian Mounds and in front of Allen Hall, etc.
4. Places to eat: there is like a Food Court in the LSU Union with several places to eat. Also The Chimes right off campus, and in front of the PMAC across from the Stadium and in the PMAC during the TAF Pregame Tailgate inside the PMAC with the band, beer, food.
5. You cam cool down in the LSU Union, and in the shade around the Memorial Tower/Quad. There are a few shady spots in between the PMAC and the Stadium as there are trees around there. Mike's Habitat and Gift Shop are two more places near there you can rest.
