Although I agree it was a very well written letter, the officers of civil war were typically highly trained and educated. The equivalent would be a West Point or Ivy League grad that would also be able to pen a similar letter.
We shouldn’t compare him to your average American. Today or yesteryear

I highly doubt that. Language as a whole has deteriorated for the masses. The wealth of all human knowledge at our fingertips and we are dumber than ever
