From Aranda's interview with Cody Worsham:

quote:

Deploying Delpit
“The question always with Grant is he does everything well, and so I think it really comes down to when we are in run-defense mode, we want edges, stuff blown up in the interior and gaps filled where Grant can play alley-to-alley,” Aranda said. “And then when we're expecting pass and it's passing situations, there's a lot of merit to Grant rushing. But if he isn't rushing, there's a lot of merit to having him in the middle of the field.”

Bottom line: Delpit does everything well

quote:

Mike Linebacker (Divinity)
“We've got him at inside linebacker now, and when we get to third down, he'll play some on the line of scrimmage,” Aranda said. “Mike's a smart kid, man. He gets football. He's a great communicator. He's confident. He is able to take charge and when things are going tough, he's able to be tough. And so I appreciate that about him, and I think the guys have really responded to him well.”

Aranda noted that the change in LSU’s defense this spring was immediately noticeable when Divinity moved from the edge to the Mack linebacker spot.

“From one scrimmage when he wasn't at the Mack until we moved him, and the very next couple of scrimmages, it was just a night and day difference from just the energy and how we responded to adversity,” Aranda said.

I think Divinity did the smart thing coming back. If he continues to improve as expected he's going to see his draft stock explode.

quote:

Expanding Quarters
The Quarter, Aranda said, “is a glorified linebacker,” a safety playing closer to the line of scrimmage. Delpit broke it in to great effect, but later in the season, it was JaCoby Stevens who proved himself a perfect fit at the Quarter.

In the final three games of the season, Stevens finished with 27 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks, and two PBUs, thriving in Aranda’s new position and allowing Delpit to move around in the secondary.
“It gives him the ability to play man-to-man on tight ends, to rush off the edge, and all of those things he does very well,” Aranda said. “JaCoby is very smart, very intelligent, understands football. He knows all of our adjustments. He knows the ins and outs of the defense. His ability to call out plays, pre-snap awareness, is very high. So having JaCoby on the field is an absolute plus for us.

“I think we'll continue to build and highlight him and put him in spots where he can really excel.”

He also talks about how Brooks will be the next ultra athletic guy to fill that role.

quote:

Freeing the Line
One aspect that particularly excites Aranda is the freedom he’ll be giving the defensive line this season.

In years past, the front has been responsible for a lot of the dirty work: eating blocks, filling gaps, and opening alleys for the linebackers and safeties to make plays in.

All of that is still on the table in 2019, but the return of veterans like Rashard Lawrence and Breiden Fehoko, plus some meat in the middle in tackles Apu Ika and Tyler Shelvin, will give Aranda some wiggle room to shake things up.

“Front-wise, we're letting the front go more than what it's done,” he said. “They're on edges more. They're attacking the line of scrimmage more. And so I've talked to Breiden Fehoko and Rashard Lawrence about that. They've asked for that for a while. And I know Coach O's excited about that.”

Having a healthy, dynamic DL will hopefully attract some more elite DL recruits that we are currently courting.

quote:

Chaisson’s Back
The plan, Aranda said, is to use Chaisson as much as possible as a rusher, while limiting how much he has to drop into coverage. That said, Aranda would like to utilize Chaisson, too, in “pass to run” rushes. It’s a read of sorts, on Chaisson’s part, which allows him to be more aggressive in pursuing sack opportunities while staying mindful of the threat of the run.

“He has that ability, to be able to decipher that and make plays,” Aranda said. “K'Lavon's very smart. He loves football. He's obviously very talented. There's a fair amount of quick twitch in him and explosiveness with him. He's hooked up right. There's things he just gets.”

It goes without saying that the defense is immediately better with Chaisson back.

I love the makeup of our 2019 D. There are no weaknesses except maybe DL depth. The other area not mentioned is CB where we have what could be the most talented group in years.

Yes. Yes. Yes.

JaCoby on the field makes Delpit even more dangerous.

Can't wait till the first kickoff.

I'm really hoping this is the defensive backfield we see early on. The talent back there is insane even by LSU standards:

CB's - Fulton / Stingley
S - Delpit
S - Harris
NB - Vincent
Aranda's toy - Stevens

I think we see an increase in sacks and INTs this year. Aranda has no weaknesses with this D so he can be more aggressive than in years past.

I'm all in. But my only concern is that Lawrence's recovery seems to be progressing slowly. He's an invaluable cog in this year's front.

Don't think D line depth will be an issue this year, shouldn't be with the Sr's returning, Shelvin ready, addition of Apu. Farell, Thomas, Logan, I think Jenkins gets snaps this year and Cherry should add some speed and athleticism at End.

I agree. Lawrence has played hurt the last couple years and I had hoped he would recover a little faster from surgery. Even if he's a full go by fall it will likely take him some time to be back to 100% and in top playing shape.

Is kelvin Joseph going to end up backing up the nickel spot rotating in or on the outside?
Or maybe both.

Meaning must feel very good about both ILB's holding up. If this is the case, the other teams are going to have trouble keeping their QB in the game.

Stevens was a great pickup when we landed him and is one of the most talented overall underclassmen I've seen in the last 20 years at LSU.

He's incredibly versatile and I truly believe, from what I've seen of him, that he could line up and effectively play half of the positions on both offense and defense.

I'm glad to hear Aranda is planning to maximize his talent but I would expect nothing less. I think we would have seen much more of what the defense will do this year, had Chaisson not gone down so early with the freak injury last season. If KC stays healthy and performs at the level the coaches expect, we need to enjoy him for his last year in P&G.

This defense could draw comparisons to the 2011 team, if the DL is nasty.

Great post. Well put together. Jacoby is the Matrix Man. This guy will be all sec this year because of Aranda's imagination and trust in him. Jacoby is the Trump card to play and make that secondary even better in time.

I would pay significant money for a chance to sit down and watch a random college game with Aranda and just listen to his off the cuff breakdown and commentary.

This is the most talented and experienced group since 2011. The few players that did come back give this defense a very strong foundation. when you have this type foundation you can let guys roam around and freelance. Just like Tyrann in 2011. This defense will have some playmakers that offenses won't be able to prepare for. There is no substitute for experience. The majority of these guys know the defense, they know where to be, they know their reads and que's. On the field there is a profound difference between learning and learned. When players are still learning there tends to be times they are late in their reads, or they make the wrong reads. Once they have learned they make the right reads in a timeframe to make great plays. This defense will be very good, exciting and effective. Texas won't know what hit them!

With the DB’s we have and the versatility of Stevens and Deloitte, do y’all see us running a 3-3-5 defense? Against non power running teams that defense could wreck shite up

Gonna be awesome. Dave has arguably never had this mix of experience and athleticism to work with on all three levels.
