Drove La.1 over the Morganza today. The forebay is pretty high.

Very odd feeling to see water almost up to the road on one side, and dry land a good 20 feet lower on the other side.
The opening is gonna be pretty spectacular. RIP next year's crawfish season.

It's been at that level for months. It's actually dropped in the last few weeks.

frick crawfish. They're overrated. Ponds will supply you all you want and the price was gonna be high regardless (too much water, too little water, too hot/cold). Open those gates before we get a real problem. My faith in the COE isn't very strong.

It’s the part most control structures get snipped when they’re built. I hear if the COE doesn’t hose it down daily, it starts to stink.

A forebay is an artificial pool of water in front of a larger body of water. The larger body of water may be natural or man-made.
if you look at the morganza spillway structure the area north of the spillway to the south end of Old River is the forebay for the morganza spillway.

In my humble opinion, these breaches are the reason the river level has dropped, temporarily, and causing a delay in the opening. Eventually, that water will head back this way.

Is water there all the time?

I predict that it isn’t going to happen this year after all.

It will probably be delayed a few more times, just looking at the forecasts and don't be surprised if it doesn't open at all. I hope I'm wrong.

Why?

No, on a "normal" year, the forebay wouldn't have water in it until May/June, if at all, and then dry up naturally by the fall. Most years the farmers hedge their bets and plant crops in the forebay. Over the last 5-8 years, however, the water has overtopped the "potato levee" and flooded the forebay.
If memory serves, the water has been there since the fall.

Why? The spillway ain't in China.

this is exactly how I feel..If a levee breaches anywhere after the spillway the COE should be taken out and shot..

When opening, the water pushes those giant boulders 100’s of yards out in the field
