Why would anybody with good automobile insurance take out additional insurance on a rental car? Seems like a waste of money to me

Because if you buy theirs, theirs is primary.

So, if you get in an at fault accident, they take the lick instead of your insurance company - and your personal rates will likely not increase.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve card provides primary rental coverage.

This. Even with the slightest issue you'll get dropped if it happens in a rental car. Happened to me. I was not at fault, still dropped. State Farm, btw.

If you're in town where you live because your vehicle is in the shop,I can kinda see not buying the Hertz insurance.

but if you're out of town in an unfamiliar city, get the max insurances every time.

ETA: American Express/Chase/Credit card "rental insurance" is only liability for THEM, or something shady and misleading like that.... and does zero for you. They wont help at all.
Personal experience.

And because I'm going to abuse it with peace of mind.
