Because it is a rule. It gives the batter a chance to get to first on a strike out. The rule is fine the way it ends

Same reason you have to block and catch it if he doesn't swing and miss it...……same reason a runner from third can score on a pass ball, same reason a runner can advance on any bad throw.....BALLS IN PLAY. You pusses wanting to change this rule never played the game.

Because the defense didn’t finish what they started. What the defense does matters, like when a batter hits a homer, but the outfielder robs it. Why shouldn’t it just be a home run since he technically hit it over the fence? That said, robs are about as rare as reaching on a strikeout so who really cares
