Any of you ever encounter anything like this on this outboard or any other?

First off, this motor has never had a strong stream from the pee hole since I have owned it. Bought this boat used about 3 years ago and have never felt like it cooled properly. I replaced the water impeller about 1 1/2 years ago and I just last week replaced the thermostat thinking this might be the problem.

When I start it cold, I get an ok stream from the pee hole but when I get underway and run at higher RPM, as the engine warms, the stream steadily decreases to the point of nothing coming from the pee hole. If I continue for a long distance at high RPM, my high temp. alarm will go off. Usually once it cools a bit, it will once again pump a little water, but not great. I'm very puzzled. Anyone got any ideas?

Assume you have blown out the lines in all directions with thermostats out so no discovered restrictions.... There is a chance that the lower stream out of the pee hole is fine at higher higher rpms. Generally the faster a pump turns the more water but this isn’t the case for outboards some times. Rubber impellers bend and stretch and don’t pump great at higher rpms. There is a lot of water bypass. Pump impeller is turning fast as hell but loses its shape and efficiency plummets. Engineers know this and it is usually factored in. Max water pressure/volume is usually around mid-range or slightly lower.

Also, the water pressure coming out much lower than you expect may or may not cause the overheating alarm The sensor for the alarm is not taking water temp as you probably know. When you slow down and let the motor cool it tells you water cooling system is probably working. Could be a bad temp sensor. If I heard the temp alarm go off I would slow down also. Truth is you may not be overheated. You need to verify you are actually overheating.

Not a good answer I know but water pump and cooling system might be working okay.

need to measure the head temp to actually see if you have a temp issue

Older 2 stroke Suzuki's were famous for corrosion. I had a 55 which is the same motor as the 65. Im willing to bet the cooling passages are partially blocked with corrosion.

Fact.

Also another reason you could be seeing a lost of water flow at full speed is that your motor might be set up to high on the transom.

You are spot on with this. May be sucking a lot of air.

Nice post.
