6-7 round is basically priority UDFAs
Doesnt matter much

Very Paytonish. Does anyone remember his first year here? We brought in a buttload of safeties and TEs mostly FAs

Defense finished the season 29th in passing yards given up. There's always room for improvement.

It could be BPA, depth or the they may want to make the 3 safety package a big part of their sub packages...it seems to be becoming a bigger part of defenses....Probably spells the end for Bell which I'm fine with

Safety depth is thin and they know a player most likely to make the roster to play special teams is another safety.
maybe people forget we cut Kurt Coleman?
DT is the only other real thin position here.
You could argue that we should bring a guy in to compete for RB3 spot.
But WR is not thin, and tho there are some nice guys left, there really isn't a spot there for a guy to make the team.

Bell arguably played his best defense last season, and the Saints design lots of DB heavy packages. This is a safety with speed. Not a bad choice given the need to be more athletic on special teams.

At least we beefed up the NT position with Edwards and Brown. Let’s hope Onyemata is eligible sooner rather than later for his pot bust.

I think they address this in the 7th or UDFA. Some no name RB always makes a splash in this area.

Exactly. I like the Hampton pick over WR bc he fills a need. He is a player that could possibly stick and at worst play special teams. Is a late round WR beating out Meredith or Kirkwood? Not likely. So save the pick for possible contributors.

6th rounders aren't likely starters. Very few become starters in the league.
This is about depth and special teams, just like Jamerson and Moore was last year. You take them to play special teams while trying to see if they can develop into something more.
You could argue whether this was BPA, but it very much was for depth especially considering the other guy we drafted sounds like a Vaccaro "clone" that will play a lot more nickel than safety.
This guy is our potential 4th safety, and more a backup to Williams. We really didn't have a second FS type player this year (or last year for that matter).
As for "scaring" Williams or Bell, if you really think a 6th rounder scares an incumbent starter the team is high on you are smoking some good shite and need to share.

But didnt want a shutdown corner to go opposite Lattimore
Posted on 4/27/19 at 3:44 pm to pjnchamps
I'm sure they want another shutdown CB. They just don't want to pay the huge price that it costs to acquire one.
We already have a #2 CB.

Not sure if your agreeing with me or not

It really seems to bother some of yall when the saints draft bpa instead of by need
Posted on 4/27/19 at 5:55 pm to bonethug0180
Ummmm. I didn't say the first word about them scaring Williams, I said it could be the end for Bell, Could, also didn't say he was a starter, said maybe they wanted to make a 3 safety SUB package... So what or who are you addressing cause its not me

I mean we pretty much did draft by both.
Draft is about now and the future, so if you are just looking at thise year's roster you are doing it wrong.
Also, some people's perceived needs don't jive with what the team thinks.
WR has been shouted by so many people, but unless we were getting one of the top guys WR basically came off the board for us. We don't need another guy to come in and compete we have 6 or 7 guys already who won't all make it. If it wasn't someone who would be a sure starter it didn't make sense. We didn't need depth there.
Easton may not pan out and Peat is on his last year. Drafting an Olineman was very important. We also need to potentially address LT but that could wait a year. We just needed one or the other this year.
PRob is coming off a major injury and PJ is on a one year deal. Bell is also on his last year. We got a gut that could potentially replace either or both spots (ala Vaccaro).
We only had one FS on the roster and safety depth was lacking. Another check.
Cook is a band aid, not a long term solution at TE. We got a guy that has some wheels and can go get it.
We needed some depth at DE and a potential upgrade for Biegel at the 5th LB spot. We got a guy that potentially could be both.
All these guys have a great shot of making the team and were specifically targeted for holes we had either immediately and/or in the future.

Plenty of others have said Williams. Post wasn't just about what you said. Anyone thinking either pick was to scare either guy is very misguided. Yes Gardner-Johnson may replace Bell, but that would be next year if he left in FA. He ain't taking his spot this year. He's more of a threat to take PJs spot, especially if PRob also isn't healthy yet.
As for the 3 safety set, yes GJ could take on that Vaccaro role there where he lurks in the box/slot. Bell isn't a great man cover and works better in space. They tried to let Bell take on some of what Vaccaro did but it didn't work.
But that doesn't mean Bell was bad. He's a great middle field rover and can carry the seam, and excells in run support. It's a different role.
But Hampton isn't about getting a 3 safety set. He's more about depth and special teams. I doubt he sees the field on D much if at all.
