I think everyone is overlooking the possibility that it may be Armstead who is gone next year, if we resign Peat for less.

LT is his natural position and where he plays best. There's an obvious drop off, but it's all pro level to pro bowl level. And while he was hurt near the end of last year he did play through it. He's missed only a few games since starting.

Meanwhile Armstead has missed an absurd number of games since getting paid. We definitely aren't getting the value we need at that spot.

But more importantly, it gives us options moving forward. If Armstead gets hurt again he's likely gone. If he stays healthy and Peat sucks then Peat may be gone. Or maybe both stay healthy and play well and we move on from Easton, who doesn't have much left guaranteed after this season. Or maybe he plays lights out and our rookie is a bust (doubtful but you never know).

This pick was definitely about giving us options moving forward, as well as hopefully solidifying C for a long time.

To move up a total of 100 spots over two picks.

With how often Peat and Armstead get injuries, we needed that new Kelemente off the bench. Either Mcoy or Easton starts with the other being the main guy off the bench depending on who is injured. Good pick and biggest weakness on our team, that 6th man on the Oline.

And just to clarify, McCoy cost us two second round picks to draft?

From the infaous Walterfootball (who hated our Davenport pick last season):

quote:

image: LINK New Orleans Saints: Erik McCoy, C/G, Texas A&M A+ Grade This is one of the best picks of the draft thus far. There was a team in the teens that was considering Erik McCoy, so to have him drop all the way to No. 48 is a major steal. The Saints needed to replace Max Unger, who retired so unexpectedly. McCoy should fill in very well. The Saints surrendered a 2020 second-round pick to select McCoy, which is not ideal, but they had to do it because McCoy was not dropping to them at the end of this round.

Checking to see out picks and this doesn't have a sticky.

I honestly dont understand why analysts are claiming he has mobility issues.

40 is a poor metric for Oline. You need to look at the agility and shuttle drills.

As for how he did there I don't know, but 40 has little to do with mobility.

Just WTF does that have to do with it, your for real gonna say that the offseasons under Loomis were better than Ireland's? There were drafts where 2 years later not a single pick was still on the roster...then there's FA moves like paying J Byrd all that money... Did Loomis ever have a draft like Latt, Williams, Kamara, Ramczyk, Anzalone, Hendrickson and Al Muhammad who started for the Colts last year.. Come on, be serious. If Loomis was so good, why did we bring Ireland in at all?

Loomis doesn't do player personnel. Loomis has never done player personnel. He is -- literally (before he came into the league) -- an accountant. He's a cap expert.

See that's the issue. He gets all of the blame of our past failures but none of the praise for our past success.

Regardless of what he actually did or didn't do, we won a SB with him as our GM, and had one of our two best drafts ever (and one of the best in league history, or at least post 80s league history) under him without Ireland, and our other with Loomis as GM with Ireland. And Loomis hired Ireland and Payton.

The man deserves a ton of credit for his role in our success, whatever you think that role is.

There are always outliers, look at all drafts/ offseasons before and after Ireland got here, FA and the draft...look at the 14 and 15 draft. Two decent players in the bunch, in 16 we took Rankins, Thomas, Bell, Onyemata and Lasco. We had 5 picks in that draft with every one becoming a starter except the 7th rounder Lasco
