Why wouldn't I just pick up a bond fund with a high yield like SPHIX?

You could, but that is a junk bond fund with an expense ratio of 0.7%. This thread is about saving/money market which is practically impossible to lose money in. A bond fund you can still lose principal.
I do use short term investment grade corp bonds for part of my emergency fund and bonds in my investment portfolio. I don't do longer term/riskier corp bonds as the risk of correlation with the stock market becomes too much.
I'll take risk on the stock/equity side where my bonds are for safety. There is a quote something to the effect that "more money has been lost chasing yield than at the point of a gun".
