Looking for recs on handheld GPS.
I have always used hunt stand on my phone for our deer lease and I know the land like the back of my hand, but brother in law Finally invited me on a bow hunting trip to Illinois him and his buddies go on every year. They have shot some monsters in the past 10 years. Don’t want to rely on my phone because cell service can be very spotty up there.

Looked at a few Garmins with Birdseye seems like a cool feature. Has anyone used it?

Budget is open.

Thanks in advance.

I’ve got a garmin 64st. Battery life is great, lots of features, and small. Use for hunting and in my yak fishing. Got on sale for around $230

You don't need cell service to know your location on a map.

i also have the 64st that I've added birdseye to. its a very good unit. however, screen size is small, especially considering what we've all become accustomed to. In your situation, id give a real hard look at ONX maps for your phone. works great with zero service, shows property lines, landowners, public ground etc.

We hunted Montana last year. Most had a 64st. I had an older 60. All worked. Helped me hike back over a mile in very hilly terrain. This year I got a screaming deal on a used Oregon 750. Plan to use my 60 as backup

What do you think about the bird eye upgrade?

Never used it. Out west the onx chips are more helpful to determine public vs private land. Otherwise I mark the location of the truck. Hike where I want. And use the bearing option to hike back to the truck.

The cons are you will spend money on a GPS that you don't need.

Obviously, maps are your preference so if I ever need your map opinion I will definitely look you up. This post was about recs on handheld gps units. Take your trolling elsewhere.

He’s not trolling, he’s telling you that you don’t need cell service to use the GPS function on your phone and see your location on almost any mapping app. OnX can be used in airplane mode after downloading the map over WiFi. Still something to be said for super long battery life and waterproofing/impact resistance if the units you’re looking at offer that, but he’s trying to tell you that functionally the thing in your pocket you spent several hundred bucks on can do the same thing that you’re trying to pay another couple hundred bucks to do.

I don't troll this board. I'm being serious.

The post below your whining breaks it down for you.

You don't need to spend several hundred for a handheld GPS. It's a fact. Your phone will work and it'll work well.

Now, if you want to buy one just because....whatever. I couldn't care less what you waste your money on.

If you plan on using it a lot, doesn't sound like it, go for it and know you'll get your money's worth. If you haven't needed one til now know that you won't be using it much to justify 400 bucks.

I've used my phone in more serious terrain for many many more miles than you will use it for.

Buy a 2nd GPS, I don't care. Tried to save the OP money.

If I wanted the pros and cons on buying or not buying a handheld GPS his opinion would be valid. I simply asked for recommendations on a handheld. I have used onX and HuntStand on my phone in years passed and have decided to buy a handheld gps. The benefits with it instead of using my phone out weight the price. I would much rather run the batteries down on a handheld gps as to my cell on a full day of scouting. I have ran into this many times scouting my own land.

What real benefit are you gaining besides not using your phone? It's not the altimeter for LA, MS, AL, or IL. Is it so you can check the barometric pressure?

It appeared to me that you wanted one because you thought you needed cell service. That's why I got in the thread, to help you. It's ok, I've had to edumacate several people on it. Now it appears that you just want one and that's ok too

Going to Illinois won't change the fact that you can still do that.

Battery bar.

Waste your money. I don't care but for a 40 buck bad arse battery bar you don't need to spend 400 for a basic hunt in Illinois.

Btw....I would go with the Oregon.

People that worry about what other people spend their money on are a pain in the arse.I have IPhone and 3 handheld gps, just because I wanted them.Couple of my neighbors are like that, always worrying about what other people spend their money on.
One neighbor always had a comment about things I buy,I finally told him as long as I didn’t ask him to help pay for it ,it was none of his business.
I have no debt and significant “nest egg”.I also have too many knives, guns and rods and reels.
I also tithe to my church and donate to St.Judes and Shriners Hospital for Children.

I owned several Garmin hand held units, but would take Gaia app on my phone in a heartbeat. Just download the maps you want beforehand. No cell service necessary. Birdseye/basecamp wont come close to the detail that Gaia will.

Nice melt.

I've clearly stated I don't care what he wastes his money on.

I also don't care that you waste money.

I’d have to sit down and look at both side by side. You would be completely fine with either one.
