It was Smith who didn't step on the bag; however, Peterson has to know that #1-the tying run is on third, #2 there is a fast left-handed batter who will be tough to double up, #3 he checks the runner and very well possibly could have had him in a run down. If Smith doesn't mess up his steps and turn, he makes the double play. Lots of basic fundamentals.
Lot of ifs and it is a long season!
