Yeah, it would become an uproar today, even though the lyrics are pretty anti-racist. What's interesting is that the point Newman was trying to make is still relevant today; northerners are, for the most part, way more segregated than those of us in the South. Yet we are often seen as the racist ones.
As a side note, Good Ol' Boys is a great album. Rednecks is a great song. As are Louisiana 1927 (Youtube) and Kingfish (Youtube).

Yeah these days he would be crucified and have death threats. Different days in different times.
