The Tampa area has the best beaches in the country. Fort Desoto, Caladesi Island, Sand Key, Madeira, St Pete, Pass-a-Grille, Clearwater (ugh, if you must), Castaway Island, etc all of which are probably better than any other beaches in the 48 contiguous.
I mean this with all due respect, you need to get around some more. While fine, and I mean probably a 6 of 10, there are much better places to go.
From the Mississippi/Alabama border to Indian Pass, Fl is probably the best actual combination of sand and pretty water. Depending on your taste in accessibility and other options, there may be better things to your needs in places like So Cal, South Carolina, Miami, etc.

quote:I actually get around quite a bit, thank you. I grew up going to the very beaches you mention. I lived in Miami/Fort Lauderdale as well as the Tampa area. I have fished and golfed Myrtle Beach and spent time at Saint Helena Island and Litchfield Beach in South Carolina. I live on the West Coast now and have visited San Diego several times as well as the beaches in the LA area (Newport, Huntington to Malibu-area beaches) and a handful from Santa Barbara all the way up to San Francisco. I tend take advantage of my job's travel benefits as often as I can.

Nothing at all wrong with the suggestions you made. Those are all very good beaches and destinations worthy of vacations.
