Why can't we get a compact, 4 cylinder diesel pickup here in the US?

To piggyback on the Ford Ranger thread.

Is this something Americans would buy?

A no frills, basic compact pickup.

Emissions and manufactures don’t want to offer diesels on base models. See the price of the F150 diesel.

The price difference per gallon now is around a dollar between diesel and gas. I know diesel runs forever, but a gas powered Tacoma will last for 300k miles.

I don't need an F-150, a Silverado or a pick-up that can pull a house. I need a small truck that I can toss some lumber, mulch or groceries into. The S-10 I used to have was great for light truck stuff. And to hell with paying $40,000+ for a Ranger.

I'm a diesel fan and own a 7.3, but with the price of diesel and the gas turbo torque tech (and lack of interest now in biodiesel)... Meh.

My Subaru ascent has 500lb tongue and 5000lb capacity, best AWD system on market, nearly 9" stock gc and gets 30moh highway.

My dad still has an old 87 Isuzu Pup that is still running with 322k.

An Indian manufacturer had tried to bring a model to the US, no frills turbo diesel compact pickup. EPA regulations killed it. We won't see such a vehicle as long as the EPA continues it's backwards, anti-science stance of focusing on tailpipe emissions over fuel economy.

I really would love for someone to make compact pickups again, diesel or not. Something the size of the old S10 or 90s Ranger.

The “mid size” pickups of today would be full size even just 20 years ago. It sucks there’s no option for a compact pickup other than to buy used, which are getting older and rarer, but that’s what I’ll continue doing until they start making them again.

Growing up, one of our neighbors had a long bed Isuzu Pup. It was small and efficient but could haul a sizable amount. And it was easy to load because it was so low to the ground.

I wonder if Toyota will ever offer a hybrid Tacoma? I think that'd save more money than a diesel.

Import tariffs on light trucks are ridiculous.

No, which is why they don't offer them. This thread will be full of people saying they would though.
