Nothing illegal about someone paying for your education as long as it is not paid by university or coaches if student does not have a scholarship.

So why doesn’t T Boone Pickens or Phil Knight pay for tuition for a ton of players so they can have more scholarship slots?
Answer is that it’s an illegal benefit.

There are obviously ways around this with “family friends”

I think that's basically true if they would have paid his tuition at any school he choose to attend.
