Perspective on players leaving for the NFL and/or not playing in the bowl game

Scenario 1:
Suppose you're a junior at LSU in engineering or computer science or some kind of tech field. That field is all you ever wanted to do. You came to LSU to become an engineer. You spent all your waking hours working and studying. You love it and all you want is to do it professionally.
In your junior year, you're approached by some huge worldwide tech firm. They want to hire you and pay you millions of dollars (with a multi-million dollar bonus) to do what you love. But the catch is: you must hire-on now. You have to leave LSU and not graduate. You have to give up the big group project you've ben working on with your fellow students and leave them behind. The company hiring you says "Take it or leave it. $10 million. If you don't come now, the offer is off the table."
Do you go and not graduate?
Scenario 2:
You are a starving art student at LSU. You are super-talented and everyone in the school thinks you are probably going to be a great artist some day (but that is not guaranteed - art is a fuzzy game). While still in school, you and your fellow students are putting on an art show. It takes months of preparation. Your art is the main attraction, but when people come to see your stuff, they will also see all the other students' stuff and they will get exposure because of you.
A week before the big show - after a year or so of work by all the students to get ready, a big art house tells you they want to buy all of your art for $10 million. They want it now and don't want to risk it being shown at the LSU art show because it might get damaged, etc. They say "We'll buy it now for $10 million, but tomorrow, the deal is off the table."
Do you sell?

The kid made the right decision for him and his family. Other kids may make different decisions because they have different wants and/or needs. People are different. This is the way of the world.

The incorporation of the 4 team playoff system has made any other bowl game obsolete and unnecessary. They need to take it to at least an 8 team playoff system to make more of these games relevant again. If not you will continue to see the best players elect not to play in inconsequential bowl games. The NCAA caused this issue and has yet to correct it. The pressure is being inappropriately applied to Greedy Williams when it should be on the NCAA.

I have no problem with Greedy's decision, but his dream of playing NFL football does not go away if he were to play in the bowl game. Your scenarios are invalid

However small is may be, that risk would exist if he were to play vs UCF.

The scenarios are just to make you think - to put you into that kid's shoes a bit. The point is: the decision to leave early and or not play in a game is a PERSONAL one. Yes there are issues of loyalty to teammates and fans and the school, but there's also realities of LIFE. I'm merely trying to point out that football players are no different than anyone else - they have to weigh all the factors in making the big decisions. And like most people, family and career and financial security (huge financial benefits) will often often outweigh loyalty and competitiveness.

I have a problem with it. He played in how many other games? He didn't get hurt then. His lack of commitment to something bigger than himself is sad. It's a hell of a way to pay LSU back for what it has done for him. As I have said before his first name is very descriptive.

I read all of it and I’m wishing I didn’t. You do realize your audience is mostly men on a LSU sports page? I think we can all appreciate his situation without some impractical hypotheticals.

Ryan Shazier played a lot of games before he got hurt last season and laid on the field not being able to move his legs. Now, he has trouble walking. Alex Smith played for a long time before breaking his fibula and fibula. Now, he has an infection that may end his career. Last season vs the Saints, Zach Miller injured his knee so bad that he almost had to have his leg amputated. How many games you think he played before that?

He's made way, way more money for LSU than they have paid to him. LSU will continue to use his accolades to recruit other athletes that will make the school millions of dollars as well. He owes LSU nothing.

BTW...this is the dumbest statement ever. Sure, Greedy could have gone to a different school and succeeded, but without a university team for him to play on he wouldn't be where he is today. That team was LSU and he abandoned them. LSU gave him the platform he needed to be recognized. Owe them nothing my arse.

Driving a car or being a passenger in a car can get you killed or injured much worse than any game of football. A pick-up game of basketball can get you injured as well. Is Greedy giving up all of these? What are the odds of injuries occurring in ONE game compared to getting in a car accident? Might be more, who knows. The point is that quitting on your team to avoid possible injuries is stupid, wrong, and selfish. What's he going to do in the pros when his contract is up for renegotiation? Quit, so he doesn't lose money from being injured? That's what NFL owners are being told by his actions. They are not going to pay him as much as they might have been willing to because of what he has done and he did it to himself.

Greedy has made and will make LSU way, WAY more money than they have spent on him. He could be a top 5 pick at a number of other schools. He doesn't owe them a damn thing. LSU will be using him to recruit other athletes for the next decade.

Unfair comparison. Techs usually work until they're 60 or so, Artists always paint. NFL football players, not a lifetime job.

NFL contracts usually prohibit players from participating in any kind of pick up game, or other physical sports, they do not prohibit players from driving cars, they probably had some very smart people assess the risk of various activities.

Don't have a problem with him sitting out, but it's how you handle the situation.You don't even tell your coaches or brothers you go to war with every Saturday before you blast it out to the world? Comes across as very self-centered and arrogant! I wish him the best, but he fumbled this situation big time!

The ncaa should provide draft eligible juniors insurance. Easy for the bowl. Not that hard for a senior year. This has been done before. Scale the benefit based on projected round and average guarantee.
