duh - a whistleblower who was in possession of documents regarding the Clinton Foundation and Uranium One
they wanted to "preserve" the evidence, unfortunately it accidentally fell into a vat of sulfuric acid and then was run through an incinerator by accident, only to fall overboard in the middle of the ocean while it was being moved to a secure location for safe keeping.
after heroic immense efforts to keep all the evidence safe, the evidence no longer exists.
on a side note, the whistle blower will commit suicide friday by shooting himself in the back of the head twice and then hanging himself

I'm pretty sure the FBI agents are required to take an inventory of the evidence they seized. It's not necessarily about making evidence disappear, it's likely more about gaining knowledge of the nature of the evidence and acting accordingly to defend yourself.
