the excuse for not playing is laughable, and exemplifies the greed and 'me too' attitude of sports specifically and society in general in this day and age.

Sit out the bowl game so as not to risk a multi-million dollar signing bonus, but have to pay the school back $20-30 grand, not a lot of thought need to go into that decision.

The scholarship is awarded under the condition that you play football. Not playing is in a sense defaulting on that agreement.

You always hear the players sitting out say they're making a business decision, well this would allow them to make a business decision well before the bowl game. Don't like the terms of the scholarship, then don't sign and be a walk-on

Nah, bullshite. He can do whatever he wants with his own body, but he is flat-out abandoning LSU and doesn’t deserve our support at all. Crazy to me that people think he shouldn’t be criticized for it.

You’re throwing out the entire team concept.

Of course he has a RIGHT to skip the game. But that doesn’t make it the right thing to do. And lightly saying “well it’s in his personal financial interest to do so, so it’s all right” just subjugates all questions to questions of money, which is a position I don’t think people realize they are taking/advocating for.

Then fans shouldn't bitch about us not making a bowl game since the damn thing is meaningless.

It's not meaningless, it's very important to the university for monitory purposes and can boost the teams outlook on the upcoming season.

"Choosing" to sit out of this game hurts the program and there's no way around that. I don't necessarily blame the kid, but the rule should be changed. The NCAA should allow these kids to sign their deals, if the agent is willing to do both. Put the pressure on the business not these kids. These kids deserve that money and the NFL or their agents can take the hits when they have injuries in these types of games.

My guess is that only first round talent would be worth the risk for these agents so it wouldn't be lots of kids doing it anyways. A second round talent needs to play in these games for their futures sake. So if the NCAA wants to save their bowl games and see the best play then they need to take this pressure off of the kids and let them sign with an agent and still play in the bowl game.

They could get injury insurance policies at that point and all get what they want. These kids don't want to quit on their teams but the way it's set up now, you really can't blame them for doing it BUT at the same time you can't blame any fan for seeing it for what it is either.

It hurts the program and the fans want what's best for the program. These kids want what's best for them so would I and if I'm in a tough situation, I may make the same choice. The NCAA needs to change this and no they wouldn't have to worry about it becoming an issue with others because the NCAA could just leave it up to the agents. Say it like if the agent is willing to risk monitary loss then the player is allowed to sign with that agent. It's out of their hands but they can still play in the bowl games. Not before the end of the regular season only after and for the bowl game.

That's the thing I can't reconcile... the injury part. The risk is there always. I see the same argument about special teams. Don't "risk" a starter on special teams as if a yard gained/lost on ST is shorter than a yard on gained/lost in regular play.

I get why Greedy is doing it. And it's his decision, and to each his own. It is a risk vs. reward type thing.

But back to injuries...
You are right, his risk didn't just go up to get injured.

However, so much of the NFL pay is going to be dependent on that combine. So while his risk to 'get injured' didn't go up (or down) the consequences of an injury just went up because: there is less rehab time between now and the money making determining event of the combine.

There's only really 2 solutions. Well, let's call them mitigations instead of solutions:
1. The insurance every one has been talking about
2. NCAA to allow workouts prior to bowl and playoff games. Do combine measurements with NFL stats takers open to every team.

There's a third, and make it a requirement of the financial aid as others have mentioned. It makes sense, but it's a nightmare for recruiting. There are better ways, more focused ways, and paths of lesser resistance.

It's not either/or. These kids have their own future to consider, and after talking with people they trust they feel it's in their best interest to sit out a bowl game, that's their decision, and it doesn't make them less loyal to the school. I doubt there are many, if any, of their teammates that look down on them for it. And on the other hand, Devin is staying, that's his decision, great for the team, but that shouldn't give us reason to look down on Greedy for what he thought was best.

Pure BS. Greedy is NOT a team player!

Lots of shameless jock sniffers in here

I guess all Clemson fans should have been OK with Kelly Bryant's decision to leave in middle of season. I mean...it was HIS DECISION TO MAKE.

Same with Bell up with the Steelers. His choice, so we all cool with it?

Agree 100%. Why not sit out the last two games or the last three games? What's the difference? If you committed to play for the team, then play for the team. I liked watching Greedy play, but he's now put LSU and "his former team" in a bind at a very critical time in the season.

I hadn't thought about that, but I agree. Seems fair. If you want to leave at the end of the year and allow your scholarship to go to someone else then so be it, but to just say "I'm done" right before the bowl game is just crappy for his team mates and a breach of the agreement made when he accepted the scholarship.

I don't understand why people are worked up over Greedy's decision. He owes nothing to the fans. He made a decision to come to LSU and for two years he got it done on the field.

There is over 5 weeks between the regular season game and the bowl game. If he wants to focus on preparing for the NFL then that is his decision. If I were in his position, I would consider doing the same thing,

I guess I shouldn't go to work the last week before I retire because it is more hazardous than the first week I started the job......

The one thing I've learned in the past week is that fans take the bowl season way, way more serious than anyone on the team does.

Explain away, but it still makes Greedy look bad no matter how you spin it! Devin White makes him look like even more of a selfish player!
