Seeing that he is short of the first down, he then slides his foot forward ever so slightly 4x after his initial mark, inching closer toward the 1st down marker. He then looks back a last time and puts the ball down right at the 1st down mark. In total moving the ball about an entire football length to give the tide a 1st down.

And yes, gumps have tried to defend this claiming that he had mentally marked it before he placed his foot and looked back just to make sure he aligned with his mental mark.
