Rice beat LSU 16-3 in the first game of the 1961 season. The game was in Houston. That 1961 LSU team went on to win 10 straight games and beat Colorado in the Orange Bowl. Rice also tied LSU 6-6 in 1962 and beat the Tigers 21-12 in 1963. Rice was a good team under Coach Jess Neely during that period. I didn’t see the 1961 game in Houston but I did see the tie game in 1962 that was in Tiger Stadium. The Tigers have won the last 5 games with Rice by decisive scores and lead the series with 37 wins to 13 losses and 5 ties.

I listened to the 1961 game on WWL when Rice beat LSU in the first game of the season - then went on to win the rest of the regular season games and destroyed the Big7 champ, Colorado, in the Orange Bowl.
Tiger fans were very optimistic going into the 1962 season - ranked #5 in the AP preseason poll. I was a junior for the 62 season and watched in disbelief as Rice tied us in Tiger Stadium.
Ironically, Rice also tied Texas that season (the only regular season blemish on Texas's record that season).
LSU finished the season ranked #7 and beat #4 Texas in the Cotton Bowl.

Between the last game of the 1961 season and the Orange Bowl against Colorado is when the Louisiana legislature passed the bill allowing LSU athletes to play schools that had black players.
