Why does Wonder Woman work?

I think a better question would be to ask the differences between the recent WW and the WW portrayed by Linda Carter. I can't speak for any differences/similarities cause Carter was way before my time but anyone who has seen both could attribute to this discussion.
I'm gonna say that the typical female protagonists that are considered superheroes aren't really a good example to work with for this topic. The main issue I hate seeing is female characters who are basically human in every regard with the given positive/negative attributes of human, being given unrealistic buffs for the sake of social justice/agenda.
Just like effects during the 70s and 80s, being practical is a good trait for male and female characters in general, as it makes them realistic and reasonable, while forced to acknowledge their weaknesses and overcome using environment or their wits. Of course this is not the view of the league of justice warriors.
Atomic Blonde walked the line extremely carefully IMO. While realistically she would likely meet her demise in her 1v1 with the russians(Slav Jon Hamm especially after being exhausted engaging multiple foes earlier), the movie made it a point to show her in a long, painful fight when 1v1'ing in which the only way she really overcomes is by using environment to her advantage(pans, hoses, plates, etc). It also made a point to have her body get super fricked up with bruises, etc which is rarely seen in the "modern portrayal" of broads in action movies
