My brothers have not seen or heard from their father in over 30 years. My dad took over that role when they were really young, and they refer to him unequivocally as dad and he refers to them unequivocally as his sons. Like I said, the context of the role of the actual father is extremely important in the terminology used.

If he’s a deadbeat sperm donor that ran out on them long ago that’s one thing. But if he’s in their lives and doing what he can it’s very disrespectful.
