Man, my folks started giving some pain meds and glucosamine that they get off of Amazon to their lab. Changed her life. Could barely move for a while, now she can't wait for a good run.

I hate to hijack the thread but what kind of breathing problems is it having?
Ours has been coughing, snorting & panting a lot, on a steroid pack now & it hasn’t made a difference

OP
Good luck, hopefully the vet can give her something to help her feel better

I’ve had 4 labs, 2 black, 2 chocolate. One chocolate developed it and neither parent had it.

Lot of good things to help. Watch the dogs weight, exercise, specifically swimming. Cortisone shots, anti inflammatory drugs, pain killers and more extreme hip replacement.

Get a good vet to diagnose and develop a regimen then follow it.

Just heavy breathing. Not much coughing. Respirations around 35-40 per minute. Loss of appetite and really lethargic, which for a beagle is unusual to not want food.

Coughing is a sign of heart issues, fluid around the heart.

That was the first diagnosis and made perfect sense.

Due to other issues we came to find out it wasn't heart issues and have now started looking for what is causing the breathing issues.

I knew I shouldn't have opened this thread. Had to put my boy down 4 weeis ago tomorrow.

Sorry to hear about OP's lab's hip problems. Seeing your dog in pain sucks ads.

Ask the dr for a 6mo prescription but assign it to you...for insurance purposes of course.

I have gone through several scenarios to try and get it cheaper. The beagle is going to be getting Mexico's finest blue pills if it does help.

Thanks

Sounds like the same as mine, the coughing isn’t constant & she isn’t coughing anything up
Heart is fine & lungs are clear
She’s also getting fat, it doesn’t seem like she eats a lot but I think she cleans the other dogs bowls when no one is looking
Not nearly as playful, has started sleeping in kitchen or hall to be on the cool floor

Curious to know how the viagra works out

Pro tip

get on Goodrx.com and search for your sildenafil. See who has it the cheapest, call the pharmacy beforehand and ensure they'll take goodrx.com coupons for pets. Confirm the price and then take your written Rx to the pharmacy. 2 different pharmacies only a block away can have MAJOR prices differences for the same drug.

Sometimes compounded medications are cheaper but in some cases can be very unreliable. I can't speak to sildenafil compounded...

Remind me in a few days and I'll give you an update. She is on pills to make her hungry and still doesn't touch kibble or much else. Has been eating a lot of what she does eat, turkey dogs and french toast this morning. Has lost a lot of weight.

Definitely weaker than she used to be.

Bichon is the best breed of pup. I'm on my second. I'll have one for the rest of my life.

Thanks for the heads up. My vet had similar advice. Apparently there is another similar pill that is only 20mg and goes by a different brand name, going to CVS tomorrow to get an idea of what I am dealing with.

Ask your vet about adequan. It’s by far the best product for arthritis. Simple monthly injection under the skin that you can do at home.

I think for dogs and cats their senses of smell are important. Kibble is made for owners who don't like the smell of dog food. (Same as dry cat food.)

I've had this problem with old animals and once they smell raw meat or fish, their appetites have perked up. Mackeral smells horrible but it's cheap and it kept one of ours alive for two more years.

Current geriatric pets like raw beef, raw chicken and raw pork and mackeral only occasionally. Dry food is set out for them, but they ignore it just like they did when their weight was dropping.

So regarding hip displagia developing - I thought this was something that they either have or don’t have pretty early in life, like the ball is either in the socket or it’s out, and not something that just develops once they are older. Am I wrong?

My dog had it but sadly never became an issue because she died early from dog chron’s disease. Sweetest dog ever.
