No telling how long that stuff sits on the shelf. It probably turned to varnish.

Not possible, it is in a sealed can, residual solids commonly called "varnish" left in a carburetor are the result of evaporation which cant happen without exposure to the atmosphere. Gasoline will also diminish in its available energy by the evaporation of soluble butanes to the atmosphere. Gasoline stored in a sealed container will remain useable almost indefinitely.
