I remember buying a baseball card price book when I was a kid. And I was super pumped to find a card that I owned was worth $2.00

The internet in particular, internet auction sites, did more to kill the value of cards than anything. Previous, you were mostly limited by your local area to find the card that you coveted. Now they are readily available to anyone in the world which exponentially increased the amount of cards in the market. They are definitely easier to find, which also took a lot of the fun out of the hunt for the cards you really sought after.

Not necessarily see below...

I got a ton of nice 90's Michael Jordans that aren't even worth much but back then collectors were all the rage for them

Many of these Jordans have a HUGE market, in particular inserts and graded stuff..take a moment to look at some of the 90's Jordans graded out and you might be shocked. You could send some off and get them graded. You might make a pretty penny off them today.

I hate to be repetitive but this is not true. There are some adjustments in pricing this has made but for as many values as this medium has "killed" the value of, it has been a boon to others. It is all about the cards that have fit into the collectors' wheel-house these days. The card market is vast and thriving. Now some items took a hit as I mentioned but to say the internet and auctions killed the card market is short-sighted and mis-informed.

I deal with cards every day. I have for years and so I am making my statements based on up to date knowledge and not broad assumptions. As an example, there are boxes/cases of cards that come fresh off the press that run thousands and thousands which are scooped up rapidly. The 1/1 Bowman Ohtani rookie autograph card recently had a $100,000 bounty on it for when it came fresh out of a pack. I pulled a Tom Brady 1/1 card fresh out of a high end pack that has a diamond on it and runs a few thousand $$$. The internet, auction sites, and break sites have enhanced and enabled this so I am afraid there is plenty of collectability these days and insane prices for many of the cards on the market, but like anything it has to be a desired card in the market as well.

I have alluded to this already but don't take my word, spend some time pricing stuff out on eBay and you will see what I am speaking of...older stuff, high grade cards, rare hits right out of the pack from 2018 products...you might be surprised.

My valuable ones are not on the attic.

I got them down the other day after 5-10 years and they’re fine.

I have a Willie Mays card but its not in the best of shape. Mint is worth about $160-200. Mine is worth about $50 probably. The best card I had was a Sandy Koufax I sold for $20 in school. I didnt know better. A friend of ours had an uncle that collected them. Had all the little tobacco cards and BB cards through the 60's. I bet he is sitting on a gold mine.

Something is only worth what another person is willing to pay for it. No one's buying a baseball card for more than a dollar.

I know a kid who bought a Wayne Gretzky rookie card in the late 80s for $700. I don’t recall the rating on it but one of the top rated Wayne Gretzky rookie cards sold for $200k recently.

It would take a while to go through all of them.

Some were pretty good 20-25 years ago lol

The mid to late 80's saw a spike in interest like never before. It was like any other boom. It burst. Now there is a surplus of cards that are worthless.

They had baseball card shops all over for fricks sake. When have you driven by one of those lately? I remember back then a Pete Rose rookie card was $600. I saw that about 23 years after the card came out. 30+ years later, an equivalent player is wildly priced.
