Unfortunately the Beatles became like Elvis, another big event. I don't think he was putting them down, just stating fact. While their music was solid, they gained damn near god like status in pop culture.

The end stage of every good band becomes this way.

yep

If you listen to something like 'Live at the BBC' you can hear their early rock-a-billy phase, when they were merely emulating popular music at that time, before mega stardom. Their personality's shine through and it's more easy to see their appeal both to teenage guys an gals, not just screaming prepubescent teeny boppers.
