"These days the public ... they are coming to listen to what you are playing and not just to look at you. ... I remember when I went to see the beatles it was to look at them. You didn't really bother what you were listening to. And today it's not what you are, it's what you're playing."
Truer words have never been spoken.

I'm not sure they needed to imply the Beatles were for "looking at" instead of their music. The competitive dig is not necessary. Of course the Beatles made great music, why say otherwise.

IDK coulda sworn both were the case when it came to Zeppelin, people attended to listen to kick-arse rock music but also to look at Pagey with the long hair, double-neck SG, and dragon costume, Plant to see his chest and mane of long blond hair, Bonzo for his drum kit and wild antics and maybe sometimes Jonesy for his medieval haircut and exploits on the keys. Jonesy was so overlooked when it comes to Zep's legacy but probably was as vital to the band as Pagey was because of his ability to distinguish Zep's sound through the incorporation of unconventional instruments and proficiency thereof.

Didn’t the Beatles become strictly a studio band for this exact reason?

Is this his way of coming out of the closet?

Sounds like more of a commentary on the audience, not the Beatles themselves.
