re: Are student loans (for undergrads) trashy?

So if the market downturn killed their savings, why can’t they have a frank conversion with their kids saying “we can’t afford tuition at xyz college, go to abc college (would say junior college, but they aren’t that prominent in LA), then transfer to the bigger public school.

My parents told me “we can’t afford it” growing up.
