I had NO idea Bowie had significant property and slaves in South Louisiana before his legacy at the Alamo

Yezzir

FWIW, his assets were decimated after his death by a number of relatives and other interests, so unfortunately my family doesn't sit on some Bowie fortune

And I'm like one of A LOT of his relatives. Direct, yes, but few, we are not

One of my grandfathers five or six times back is Arthur Middleton, who signed the Declaration of Independence. One of his sisters married a German nobleman and moved to Germany. Baldur von Schirach, who ran the Hitler Youth from 1931-1940, is descended from her, making us something like fifth cousins. So from one family line, I am related to a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and a Nazi war criminal.

One of my wife's great-grandfathers was in the SS and was executed for war crimes in Yugoslavia.

But not all is lost. I am fourth cousins to Audie Murphy, and my five greats uncle was Rutherford Hayes, the 19th President of the United States.

Here's my cousin Baldur and his boss:

Related to Robert E. Lee on my paternal grandmothers side of the family.

What is your link?

There were tons of Lee's in Virginia, even a "Lee's Town" because there were so many of them, and they also shared alot of the same first names, but weren't all necessarily related. For example, Robert E Lee's uncle was John Lee, which I also have a John Lee as a g-g-g-g grandfather at the time, but there were multiple John Lee's in VA all living in the same proximity. So it is unverifiable if my John Lee was Robert's Uncle (which would make us cousins).

I’ve been told that Pat Garrett is a distant relative, which makes sense considering my family and his both track back to north Louisiana.

And just found out I am a distant cousin of Cowboyfan89.

That could be a death sentence on this board. May not want to claim that in the open...lol

My father has letters between Linus Pauling and my grandmother. She was friends with him before he won his Nobel prize in Chemistry.

My Great Grandfather was farmer in Ascension Parish but was also a foreman and helped build a lot of the first roads in the parish. During lunchtime on a hot July day Huey Long was traveling from BR to NOLA on Airline and noticed my GGF, along with his crew, resting under an oak tree while on their break. Long immediately fired everyone. The next week my GGF and crew were rehired.
