Banjo’s audience is huge and I guarantee the internet has reflected that. While I wouldn’t be surprised at them NOT being included, I wouldn’t say it would be really surprising that they’re included. When you think of platforming icons, Banjo is right up there with Mario and crash.

I love B&K, had both Nintendo games. They totally deserve the respect, but honestly, there are dozens of characters I'd want over them in Smash. Plus, the franchise is kind of dead
That's a bit of a stretch.
According to VGChartz, Banjo has sold somewhere around 9 million or so games lifetime, all games and that's including the Gameboy off shoots.
Super Mario Odyssey alone sold 9.6m copies. Sonic 2 - 6.0m all on its own. Crash 2 8.0m on its own. Banjo is nowhere near that class.
