They are bred for sales and to be fast 2 year olds, not really to race anymore. Plus, we have to treat them with kid gloves and race less frequently because most are more fragile.

Also, a lot of performance enhancing drugs used to be legal.

I say most goes back to the breeding, though. Oh! And over here we breed for speed not necessarily speed carried far. Sprinters are every bit as fast or faster than ever.
