The Tiger by which all others are measured.
My dad’s complete belief in him colored my own esteem for the man.
The departed we now remember still live on earth through the acts of goodness they performed and in the hearts of those who cherish their memory.

All this at 210 lbs. and 6'1".

A quote that is most commonly attributed to LSU track coach Al Moreau is:

"If [Cannon] gained 10 to 15 pounds, he would win the gold medal in the shot put. If he lost 10 to 15 pounds, he would win it in the 100. But, the weight he is at is just right for him for football, and that's how he's going to make his living."

One of the great all around athletes in history, probably the finest in the SEC until Bo Jackson.

Meet Mr. Cannon as we left the spring game this year. Was very nice, talked about the old days and took a picture with my Father in law and son. Rest in peace Billy Cannon.

Remember - the punt return, 10/31/1959

I still remember after this DeSean Jackson punt return, Mushburger mentions Billy Cannon (at 1:50). It was the first time I heard that name, and I always wondered who he was, but never bothered to look it up.

Cannon's arguably the most important player in professional football history because he left for the pros the same year the AFL was created and was the first 6-figure salaried player ever, kind of the reason pro football players make the money they make currently through his market impact that time

Only saw this great man one time and that was in April 1959 at a track meet at Northeast Louisiana State College. The Styron twins (Don and Dave) were world class athletes and set many records in the 100 yard dash and hurdles. Saw this great athlete run a dead heat in the 100 yard dash with Dave Styron (who weighed about 160 pounds) and Billy weighed at least 210 pounds. One of the greatest performances I ever saw. May he rest in peace.

Dietzel always said that the most impressive part of the punt return was that the humidity that night was record breaking & Cannon, basically played the whole game, going both ways except for a few drives in the first half. For Cannon to have that much stamina left in him at that point in the game was, in Dietzel's words " incredible." And Cannon & Rabb did not just make the last tackle, the Rebs had first & goal from the one under a minute, & LSU/Cannon stopped them 4 times to seal the victory. Had that game been on tv, let alone an ESPN like station, it would have been one of the all time highlight games in college football. Watching my first LSU game ever, sitting on Row 1, South Endzone, right behind the goal posts, I watched the rest of the LSU team go bonkers after the stop. Cannon could barely limp to the sidelines, he was that spent. Consider that Coach Dietzel was punting on first downs most of the second half, as were the Rebs. It was that kind of defensive games. And can still see Coach Vaught, post game, standing at mid field, hands on hips, staring up at the scoreboard. A long time post game.

Had the pleasure of meeting Dr Cannon twice at dental continuing education classes...had lunch with him during one of those as well. Shy. Reserve. Humble.

My kind if hero.
