It doesn't say anything about a person, its a unique situation every time. I would never think less of someone who said enough is enough so they wouldn't be hurt anymore after a lifetime of hurt. There is no way to know if the parent is being legitimate in this effort or not as they spent their entire lives eroding any trust their children may have had for them.

Hard to say if they are having a legitimate change of heart and want to apologize in a true and unselfish manner or they simply see the end and are trying to clear their own conscious in yet another self-serving manner.

That said, i think a conversation if they are seeking to apologize is worth hearing, certainly wouldn't go out of my way in any way shape or form to make them feel better about what they did or try and take care of them at the end of their live sin some manner.
