Stovall's numbers reflect the way the game was still being played at the time. He might have won the Heisman in 1962 if LSU had beaten Ole Miss and if there had not been several other good players from the SEC in contention.

No, I understand. I still think Hilliard was at least a comparable LSU overall "star", such that it seems weird attributing the number only to Stovall.

If not for the politics of the award. He was waaaayyyy better than the eventual winner who ended up as a top 10 nfl bust.

My dad and uncles said he was better than Cannon on defense and about as good as Cannon as a RB.
