Some people are just curmudgeonly assholes. It may have had nothing to do with your race.
I’ve had similar experiences, although not in the south. Just keep being yourself and don’t let others change you.

Yep, this probably had nothing to do with race and everything to do with two people butting heads and starting a negative cycle.
Just diffuse it from the start, things go better.
