It's a very good series. I put it on my lists of book series I think are better than The Name of the Wind when we had that discussion a while back(and several people fairly called me crazy, though I still think so).
The first trilogy is the best I think, but all of the Fitz books and the Liveship/Rain Wild books set in that world are really solid. Never read her Soldier Son trilogy though, those books are horrifically bad (one of the few series I've dropped without finishing).
I think it just falls into the cracks a bit because it's not one of the first 6-7 series that comes to mind when someone asks for fantasy recommendations. I tend to say Erikson, Abercrombie, and Scott Lynch first, even though I'd consider Hobb in my list of top fantasy authors.
