Compare the clubs and technology that went into design and manufacture of them in Jack's era to Tiger's era. For example: Nicklaus shot 17-under par 271 in 1965 for a 72-hole record lasting 32 years until Tiger Woods shot 18-under par 270 in 1997. So, 32 years of advancement in the tools of goldf and Tiger at his best was one stroke better than Nicklaus.

Well, if you want to take clubs into account, you also have to take courses into account. They were more difficult in Tiger's era than Jack's. And Tiger's equipment back then wasn't that much better. However, the jump in technology from 2000 to the present is astronomical. I actually saw a bit on TV where pros were hitting old school wooden drivers and they really didn't lose all that much in distance compared to drivers of Tiger's era of dominance. The big jump you see now is anyone can hit the ball 300 and clubs are much more forgiving with oversized heads, ultra light graphite shafts, etc. Tiger actually had been using outdated equipment for years until very recently.
