Never played a GoW game (I know, I know) If I start with this one, am I lost lore-wise?
Same, for me right now after 6 hrs in all I really feel is a lack of a deeper relationship with Kratos unlike ppl who have played them all would feel.
As of right now, this is up there with Witcher 3 personally as my favorite games of this gen

It's strange...having not played this new one but seeing videos about how Kratos has changed as a character being a dad and all is very intriguing to me. I was 21 when the first GOW game came out and now 34 and a father. Its wild to think that a video game character is growing with it's originally targeted audience but that seems to be the case here.
In the three Greek mythology entries Kratos was a wrecking machine hell-bent on revenge. This one it seems he's trying to leave the past behind and become a better version of himself and raise a son. It doesn't seem like we're getting the same character here. It's very interesting.
Gameplay is also very different but it's worked out for other franchises. It looks like the development team pushed all the right buttons and made a new game based on an old familiar character and seems like they nailed it.
To answer the question if you have the ability to play through the first 3 main entries to GOW then definitely do it. They were great games. If not, you may only be missing some back story on Kratos. I'm sure there are videos explaining the first 3 main games.
