I read about Nationwide’s dog coverage Nationwide
Do any of you have any insight on this plan or others from competitors? My brother recently got a dog and got this coverage through work and I wanted to see if it’s worth it.

I don't get insurance on anything I can afford to replace on my own.
Vets are not that expensive, its like dental insurance. For most people you are fine just paying out of pocket.

If you have one dog, it could be. I mean, insurance is never worth it until you need it.
We have four dogs, so the costs exceed self-insuring. For what it's worth, we had a dog have some kind of weird cerebral issue last year. We spent about $6,000-$7,000 on MedVet bills.

I have health insurance on my dog through Healthy Paws. He just turned 1 and I have had him covered since I adopted him at eight weeks old. I did fairly extensive research and they are ranked at or near the top of most consumer reviews. I have a higher deductible as I only want coverage for unforeseen, high cost issues. I view my dog as part of my family.
I had my last dog for almost four years before we lost him. I adopted him as a puppy as well and pretty early on realized he had an intestinal disease. We managed it as best we could but lost him after about four years and a $5k surgery. We did not have him covered as I was not aware of pet insurance before his issues.
It's a personal decision. If you aren't willing to spend that kind of money (i.e. surgery) on your dog then you don't need insurance. But if you are, I think $40/month and peace of mind is worth it. Do your research though. Pet insurance is not a mature, competitive market like normal health insurance and I'm betting you can get taken advantage of if you go with the wrong provider.
Hope that helps.
