Roughly 7.2 million pounds of debris were removed from clogged city catch basins across the city during a four-month emergency cleaning program, including more than 93,000 pounds of Mardi Gras beads on a five-block stretch of St. Charles Avenue downtown.

"Once you hear a number like that, there's no going back," Dani Galloway, interim director of the city's Department of Public Works, said Thursday afternoon (Jan. 25) at a news conference. "So we've got to do better."

Since late September, crews working under a $7 million emergency contract have flushed out 15,000 clogged catch basins - nearly one-fourth of the city's full roster of about 68,000 storm drains. Using almost two dozen vacuum trucks, crews working for Baton Rouge-based Compliance EnviroSystems managed to collect around 7.2 million pounds of debris from Sept. 26 to Jan. 23.

Bet there weren't any titties seen at this bead offering

ETA:

If there any to be seen not quality. More like a tube sock filled with a cup of flour.

A dump run by moronic elected officials, put into power by moronic citizens, can’t figure out that you should regularly clean the catch basins.

That city deserves everything it gets.

I vote for cancelling Mardi Gras.

Can't have this problem.

There are several more statues we could remove before dealing with this nonsense. People's feeling should come before protecting the city from catastrophic flooding.

Beyond city staff cleanings and pricey contract work, Galloway said New Orleans residents have to step up to clear catch basins in their own neighborhoods. She said city officials have met with dozens of residents from every city district in recent months train them on how to clean catch basins.

frick that. Mitch had 8 years to take care of this shite. Will the citizens receive some of their tax money back, since they're being asked to do the city's job for them?

I'd tell the city to eat an aids dick and laugh as I stuffed more trash down the drains.

Yeah this is the same post I made in the Mardi Gras "bears" thread. Call the cops, I don't care.

I mean, if I'm the company that collected them, then I pressure wash them and sell them...right?

Since this is probably the cause of the flooding.... will they bring the statues back?

Uh-oh. I hope this interim person wasn't the worst catch basin cleaner in the history of Oxford, MS.

Not surprising.

Another item on the long list of our city's gov't deficiencies.

There was a busted pipe under my sister's street for 3 fricking weeks before someone went out there to fix it. It was even before the freeze. There was a river running down the street for 3 weeks, and she finally called a Nola.com reporter to at least put pressure on them.

All this and our arrogant POS mayor refuses to go to a meeting with the POTUS about infrastructure funding all because he's a meanie.

frick Mitch. I truly despise that man.
