Being more educated just means that one has spent more time in some type of academia regardless if it was meaningless pyshobabble like gender studies. Sometimes it really means something if one earns a degree in engineering or an advanced degree in certain segments of a business school.

Spending a few years after HS extending ones time spent in an academic setting is not an indication of intelligence. The welder in this case could very well be far more intelligent despite not having extended his/her time in an academic setting beyond HS.

I think we have different definitions of educated, because I agree with you. I never said the welder wasn’t smarter or more financially stable, just that he has fewer degrees.

No, one can be educated by being an apprentice blacksmith.

"Formal education" may be a more correct term.
