I agree with driving south from Winnie. We have taken numerous cruises out of Galveston, and this is the route you want to take. The ferry ride is quite nice.

I agree with the comment about not staying in Beaumont. Stay in Lake Charles at one of the aforementioned casinos, even if you don't gamble.
An alternative is to just go to Houston. There are plenty of great, affordable hotel options in Houston and nearly any kind of food you want.
Or possibly the Kemah Boardwalk. Stay on I10 to Baytown, and go south on 146.

Just use waze once you pass lake Charles and listen to it for advice on whether to take highway 73 to the ferry, Winnie exit to the ferry, or 146. Waze is never wrong
