They don't have a choice but to protest and stay away.
Actually going and engaging in convo with Trump about civil rights acknowledges Trump cares about civil rights and undercuts their narrative that Trump is a racist.
If they cant say "vote for me because Trump is a racist", they will have nothing else to run on.
Race is a massive card they play, and they can't risk doing anything that jeopardizes it.
Gotta protect Muh Race. They don't want it fixed.
EDIT: Trump should call out that voters should question their motives for skipping when they have an opportunity to engage the president to improve race relations. Are they really trying to make things better for their constituents?

Are you stupid enough to believe trump would engage regular people in a question and answer situation? He would never put himself in that type of situation.
