The Great Cheese Conspiracy

Alright folks, here's the deal. I'm originally from up north- When I was young my parents would take me to the grocery store and while at the deli, they would ask the worker there if I could have a free slice of cheese. They'd always say yes and I would get some cheese out of the otherwise boring grocery trip. However, I moved down south and mentioned this off hand to my buddy and he looked at me like I was crazy!
We have a hypothesis that it's a regional thing but we just don't know for sure. Did y'all get the free cheese? If you wanna contribute to our understanding of this phenomena, you can also fill out this anonymous google form. Google Doc

I have never thought to ask for free cheese. I have seen HEB here in Texas have cubes of cheese out to sample and you can ask for a sample of deli meat.

To be honest that's our hypothesized "cutoff" of where people above the line get cheese but people below do not.

kids get a free cookie at Kroger and Publix. Publix even goes as far to give a balloon. My Target also gives a cookies but not all do that.
