So it has not physically happened.
Most Americans have choices for ISP with the cable/satellite/cellular world now. I have about 10 different options where I live
It would take a lot of collusion between companies to kill it.

The FCC has a looooong history of being the puppet to large telecoms. They kept satellite TV deliver off the market for decades as a sweet little gift to cable companies. Terrible for consumers. Great for cable companies.
But I suppose this time it will be different...
