Any of you baws familiar with it? Thinking about making a couple hunts next week while I am off. Any tips, expectations, etc? I have never been before.

When are you off? The place will be filled with 1000 of your closest friends next Friday-Sunday.

If you like hogs, plenty of opportunity there. I've had 4 bow hunts out of 7 there with hogs at 25 yards or less. Just didn't have a clear shot.

I will be in there Monday thru Thursday only. I know better than going public land for Thanksgiving. Haha

Most people here are familiar with it. Taking my son before work tomorrow to shoot a few woodies.

Being so close to Baton Rouge and Lafayette, it gets plenty of pressure. Just like most public land, need to get as far away from truck or 4 wheeler access as possible for big game.

Farther you walk, lower potential for someone being on top of you. Plenty of deer and hogs, just have to put in the work.

This is all very accurate, although I will say I've found some areas that have very little foot traffic from other people, yet hold quite a few hogs and deer and are less than a half a mile from the road. The area just seems to discourage other people from hunting it, but I've had some success getting in close to hogs. There are deer in the area, but I've only come close in the dark.

My advice would be don't discount a spot just because it doesn't look like typical deer habitat. All of the timber management in Sherburne has the deer using some areas you may not expect. Hell, the main area I hunt has had constant deer sign, and I've yet to find any feed trees, but I know where the deer are bedding down and where they are traveling.

I would love to shoot a hog. People talk like you can see pigs pretty much anywhere you walk in Sherburne. Is it that easy there?

There have been very few places I've gone on Sherburne and not seen hogs.

I've been making trips out there since last summer/fall, and in probably 30 trips, I've seen hogs on probably 20-24 of those. I've had them right on the side of the road next to my truck, only to run off when I pulled down the road and got out.

Some areas are worse than others, but I've seen them all over that place.

Dam, so they really are out of control there.

And thanks for response.

Man, I used to spend a lot of time out there in the mid to late 90’s and never saw the first hog. Duck hunting used to be good out there too. We mainly killed squirrels, rabbits and ducks out there...and a lot of small bass in the bayou. Loved that place when I was at LSU.
