Is Kiss really overrated, though? They've mostly been hated by critics for most of their career, and when they do get praise, it's usually in the form of back-handed compliments.

But on the other hand, most of their output post-1979 is pretty sketchy overall, and they exist today by coasting on their 70's material & image, so maybe you have a point

Critical judgment is not the basis for being overrated. It's actually the opposite. Almost any artist you can name that is seen as "underrated" is appreciated by critics but not by a large audience. Although I kinda like some early Kiss stuff, their huge fan base coupled with over half of their catalog (post-Creatures Of The Night at best) riding on memories of fumes, they could be the poster-children for overrated.
