Yeah if they had based their decision not to go on principles, Vietnam was a meat grinder and those that chose not to go based their decision on not wanting to get killed or wounded which is also a nice working definition of cowardice.
And if you are a coward thats fine, but its tad hypocritical to remake yourself as some sort of rah rah pro military guy when you didnt have the balls to go when your country needed you most.

Really? Without debating the imperative of the Vietnam conflict I hardly think the republic was in jeopardy at any time. I don't believe I would have been willing to put my young life on the line for such a cause. I completely understand why so many chose not to risk dying for essentially nothing.
It's hard to imagine a bigger waste of lives then those who died in the jungles of Vietnam.
That in no way diminishes the service of those who fought in Vietnam.
